Holee suggested that I try wood burning the spots and stripes instead of painting. Tisme said just stains, rather then paint. Here's an example that compares the two finishes. The animals on the right have been left natural, with the spots and stripes wood burned, then waxed. Animals on the left painted and waxed. This is a good comparison.
I am leaning (way leaning) towards natural with some wood burning as necessary, for spots, stripes, and fur. With this technique, the animals would be all tans and dark browns.
What do you think?

I love the wood burning ones!!! DO it that way!!
Ditto! I love the wood burnt ones!
The natural with burning is excellent.
The wood bruning looks better for the tiger and the giraffe. The Elephant looks better painted. The Panda is a wash
Oh I love seeing the wood grain in the elephant..it's wood art and should be seen.
It depends. The snage with burning on a carving I have is the smooth surface needed . Any variation and I get an "ink spot" with the burner.
However I use the wire tipped burner as opposed to the solid type popular in the US.
Wood burning...
Woodburned it'll be! Thank you!
