A traditional first carving to teach is the 3 or 5 minute owl. To complete this little owl, you must use your knife to make stop cuts, thumb push cuts., and stab cuts; at the very least. It's fast, easy, and teaches knife use.

That's a great project for anyone to practice basic cuts. It would also fit well on some of the mini totem poles that I'm carving and I'm gonna have to make this progressive model for teaching the kids. Great project!
Retired male. Next birthday will be 78. Spend most of my time carving and quilting. Retired early (51) from a major university; so I am gettin this retirement thing down real good. I talked myself into wood carving. My daughter talked me into making quilts.
