Singer 201 to the ER!

Well, took my ol' 201 in to the ER. They kept it for a major transplant and some adjustments. Been assured that she'll be better than OK. In fact the technician said with the necessary remedies, she'd outlast me. But the estimated price for this will be a bit in excess of $100. However, according to the attending technician, these 201's in healthy condition are selling for $200. Here's the breakdown:

Service call that includes cleaning, oiling
and greasing, adjustment.......................$43.00
Replacement foot controll.......................$50.00
Realignment......................................$39.00

Now, I only paid $25.oo for it. Oh decisions, decisions, decisions.

Tom, my son bought me a computerized viking..very pretty. It even has a screen on it. The darn thing is always out of wack. I have 6 old to real old machines. A little greese on the gears and oil in the holes and they just keep running.

Then for some fancy stitches I order from "Home shopping" a Euro Pro for $179. about 8 yrs. ago. It's also a gear machine with no fancy stuff..has 13 neat stitches that you dial up and zig zag. I've beaten it up with very heavy fabric's...it just sings on.

Fix the old singer and don't think about the $100. bucks...your granddaughter might be using it when she's your age!

I would also get it fixed. I had a chance to get an old Singer back in the 1980's. It was gorgeous and in a cabinet with all of the acessories and book from the 1920's. I thought $90 was too much at the time (it probably was for my income). I still kick myself to this day for not getting it.

Between my husband and I we own about 35 sewing machines with the oldest being a 1903 New Home and the newest being a 1974 Pfaff 1222. He has been buying quite a few off craig's list for $20-25 and usually they just need a good cleaning and oiling. When I went to the quilt retreat a few weeks ago I brought one of our 1950's SInger 301s and it worked beautifully. FIx the old one - it will still be going long after the fancy computerized ones are toast!

Worth it! Oh yes, it's worth it! I have the Singer Featherweight and sewed on it all day today. It's just a great machine. And the 201, well I'd love to have one of those too. Yours is the first I've seen. blessings, marlene

Who says the internet is a waste of time? I took you alls advice and said fix it. $123.00 to bring it back to the way it is supposed to be. The repair fellow said not only will the machine outlast me (that ain't much), but I'll have a machine that my grandkids can use
